Where this comes from
Sources
Every account on this site carries a list headed Where to check this. That heading is deliberate. It is not a record of what was read in order to write the page. It is a list of places a reader can go to check the page against something better.
How the pages were written, plainly: they are compiled from the standard published histories and reference works. Nobody from this project has visited the places, read the archives or held the manuscripts. That is a real limitation and it is stated at the foot of every page rather than hidden.
The arithmetic across all 1867 lines on the site: 730 resolve to something in the library below and are linked directly; 1137 name a real, findable document that this project has not consulted, and are printed under a heading that says exactly that.
A third category used to exist: lines that named nothing checkable at all, phrases like the standard accounts or contemporary reporting. There were 309 of them. They have been deleted. A gesture at a source is not a source, and printing one under any heading is a claim the page cannot support.
No URL in the library below was guessed. Each one was fetched and confirmed to be the thing it is described as. Where a document could not be verified, it is not linked.
