Dera Baba Nanak

ਡੇਰਾ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ

Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district sits on the Indian side of the Ravi, about four kilometres from Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur.

For seventy-two years pilgrims looked at Kartarpur through binoculars from a viewing platform on this bank. The corridor opened from here on 9 November 2019.

It has been closed since May 2025.

The Bedis, descended from Guru Nanak Dev Ji, settled on this bank after the Ravi took the original settlement across the water, and the town is named for that. The Darbar Sahib here holds a chola, a cloak said to have been given to the Guru on his western travels, which is brought out on fixed days.

The Ravi has moved repeatedly at this point and has taken buildings on both banks. The Kartarpur gurdwara across the river was rebuilt in the 1920s with Patiala money after flood damage, and embankments have been built to hold the channel since.

The corridor terminal on the Indian side is a large modern complex handling several thousand pilgrims a day when it is open. It sits in fields, next to a small town with no hotel capacity and no economy built to serve it, which is the standard pattern for infrastructure dropped into rural Punjab.

What we don't know

  • Reopening date.
  • The provenance of the chola held at Dera Baba Nanak, which rests on tradition.
